Dispelling the Myth Surrounding Green Certified Homes

The USGBC South Florida Chapter presents its "Residential Green Building" educational series with this exciting event at PB Branch.

The “Dispelling the Myth Surrounding Green Certified Homes” event has been brought to each Branch over the past months, followed by a series of related "Green Homes" educational programs; compliments of the Chapter's Residential Green Building Working Group.

For the Palm Beach Branch this educational opportunity will be mixed with plenty of camaraderie, food and getting to know attendees as usual.

• Attendees with start their evening with the always-popular GREENworking time when beverages and appetizers are served and attendees have a chance to meet the presenters and other local Green Homes-minded individuals.

• This will be followed by the first part of the lecture, an overview of the LEED for Homes and Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) programs that specifically address the challenges, costs and administration of the programs, and a local certified Green Home project profile.

In a nutshell ...

This course is appropriate for new LEED APs, as well as those pursuing GBCI's LEED AP Building Operations + Maintenance credential.

Workshop participants will discuss the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in the LEED process, as well as strategies for communicating with team members at various stages of that process.

It will also provide you with the Continuing Education credits/units noted below.

Description: This course is intended for building owners, operators and suppliers who are familiar with the LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Rating System, but new to implementing it on projects or looking to brush up on implementation best practices. It is also useful for design professionals, investors and others seeking to enhance their existing buildings with green operations. At the end of this workshop, you should be able to apply your new found knowledge to real-life LEED projects.

Throughout the day, our LEED Faculty instructor will engage you in discussions and interactive activities based on real LEED projects to enforce what you’ve learned.

Additionally, the course will help you:

Communicate the purpose and benefits of the LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance rating system.
Successfully develop and implement a plan for LEED certification and recertification.
Facilitate the LEED process with all stakeholders.
Utilize the tools available to support LEED implementation and documentation.

The course addresses the intents and requirements of prerequisites and key credits within the rating system while providing real world examples of strategies to meet them. In a nutshell ...

Completion of this class will help you prepare to take the Green Associate Exam.

Description: There are many Green Associate Exam Prep courses taught in South Florida, but very few are being taught by USGBC LEED Faculty who are fully accredited and trained to offer this type of education. This full-day course offers an overview of the LEED framework; concepts of integrated design; and policies and procedures for working within the LEED program. Attendees will learn of the resources available to help prepare for the exam (including sample tests), and gain an understanding of sustainable design strategies in the built environment for site management, water use, energy use, resource management, and indoor environmental quality.

Get you to pass the LEED GA exam!

Instructor: LEED Faculty Member Rob Hink. One of the region's most popular instructors, Rob brings real-world work experience and an infectious enthusiasm to his classrooms.

Date, Time, Location and Tuition: February 24, 2012 at MAPEI Americas Headquarters, from 8:30am until 5pm. Light lunch provided. USGBC South Florida Member course registration cost is $275. Non-member cost is $325.

Description: USGBC has been testing the strengths and weaknesses of LEED for Neighborhood Development through nearly 240 pilot projects over the course of two years. Hear from two pilot case studies about lessons learned and best practices that have helped inform revisions to the rating system. Presenters will briefly describe the pilot project they have worked on, identify implementation challenges, and review areas where the rating system influences project decision making. Session objectives:

• Gain knowledge about the LEED-ND Rating System and its applicability from pilot case studies

• Compare LEED-ND technical strategies from certified pilot projects located in urban locations or on former brownfields

• Explain the challenges faced by LEED-ND pilot projects and the strategies used to overcome them

• Identify key reasons why development teams of owners chose to pursue LEED-ND certification for an urban infill or brownfield redevelopment project.
