Emerging Green Builders

The South Florida Chapter's Emerging Green Builders (EGB) group is a coalition of students and young professionals dedicated to becoming and recruiting the future leaders of the green building movement.  Like other EGB groups around the country, the Chapter’s EGB group offers young people the opportunity to get involved in green building here in our South Florida region, gain access to USGBC resources, and participate in local events.

The South Florida EGB group (some of whom are picture above with USGBC CEO Rick Fedrizzi and Miami Mayor Manny Diaz at the 2009 Gateway to Green conference in Miami) is involved with many activities. For more information, visit their website.

The local contacts for the EGB groups in South Florida are as follows:

Natural Talent Design Competition
Perhaps the most exciting of the group’s activities is the USGBC's Natural Talent Design Competition, which provides applied learning experience in the principles of integrated design, sustainability and innovation, all of which are components of the LEED Green Building Rating System.  To learn more about the recently concluded 2009 competition, click here.  Check back here for details regarding the 2010 competition.

Scholarships -- 2009

The USGBC South Florida Chapter is pleased to announce the 2009 Emerging Green Builders Scholarship Program.  This year, ten scholarships
will be awarded to local college students and
young professionals (five years or less out of college) to allow them to enter the building
industry or further their existing careers with recognition as LEED Accredited Professionals.

The USGBC South Florida Chapter gratefully acknowledges the two sponsors of this new scholarship program -- Dave Vernon and Resource
4 Floors, and Rob Hink and The Spinnaker Group.

The first set of 2009 winners of the EGB
Scholarship Program are Joel Hernandez, Michele
Markovitz and Denaye Hinds.  To learn more about
these three worthy students, click on the
newsletter at right.

These scholarships will allow recipients to attend one of the LEED Technical Review Workshops
offered by the South Florida Chapter in 2009.
The scholarships also will cover the cost of taking the LEED Accreditation Examination.  Recipients completing the workshop and passing the examination will become LEED Accredited Professionals, acknowledged experts in green building.  Through this scholarship program, young professionals earning the prestigious LEED AP credential will join the ranks of the most
progressive members of the building industry and
will be able to offer employers a set of skills that
is increasingly in demand.  At the entry level, an employee oriented in the principles of green
building will be a valuable and affordable asset to organizations seeking to transform their practices.

Scholarships will be awarded based on the clarity of a letter of interest that explains the applicant’s understanding of sustainability and how he/she hopes to apply the principles of green building in their future work.  To review Student Scholarship Application ...
