LEED and High-Performance Commercial HVAC Systems
    Seating is Limited!

The building industry is certainly seeing an increased focus on energy efficiency. Whether motivated by the rising cost of energy, environmental or social awareness, the green building movement, or tax incentives, the one action common to all is to find ways to reduce building energy use.

This seminar will cover various HVAC design and control strategies that can significantly reduce building energy use and help achieve points toward LEED certification.

    Agenda:
    9:45am - 10:00am      Introduction
    10:00am - 11:00am    LEED and HVAC Systems
    11:00am - 12:30pm    High-Performance VAV Systems
    12:30pm - 1:00pm      Lunch (Included in Tuition)
    1:00pm - 2:00pm        High-Performance Chilled Water Systems
    2:00pm - 2:30pm        Sustaining HVAC System Performance

LEED and HVAC Systems (60 minutes):
LEED 2009 represents several substantial changes from LEED v2.2. This session will provide an overview of these changes and discuss various HVAC design and control strategies that can be used to meet the prerequisites and earn credit points. The focus of this discussion will be on the "Energy and Atmosphere" and "Indoor Environmental Quality" sections of the LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations rating system.

    High-Performance VAV Systems (90 minutes):
Variable-air-volume (VAV) systems are used to provide comfort in a wide range of building types and climates. This session will discuss unconventional design and control strategies that can significantly reduce energy use and help VAV systems deliver their full energy efficiency potential. Specific topics include: optimized airside system controls, cold air distribution, air-to-air energy recovery, and dedicated outdoor-air systems.

    High-Performance Chilled-Water Systems (60 minutes):
This session will discuss several system design and control strategies that can significantly reduce energy use of a chilled-water system. Specific topics include: reduced flow rates, variable-flow systems, heat recovery, optimized control strategies, and ice storage.

Sustaining HVAC System Performance (30 minutes):
To capitalize on an energy-efficient design, the HVAC system must be capable of sustaining that high level of performance throughout its life. This session will discuss various strategies and technologies to help sustain system performance. Specific topics include: trend logging and diagnostics, facility energy use monitoring, periodic commissioning, and making automation systems easier-to-use

    Miami-Dade and the Keys
Branch Meeting: LEED for Neighborhood Development

The Miami-Dade and the Keys Branch of the USGBC South Florida Chapter has an enviable track record of hosting outstanding educational programs and tours, and this month is no exception.

Our December Branch meeting will provide an overview of the LEED ND rating system and the prerequisites and credits.

The way we grow -- especially how and where we grow --will have a profound effect on our natural resources and on us.  As the U.S. population continues to expand, consumption of land grows exponentially -- currently, three times the rate of population growth. At this pace, two-thirds of the development on the ground in 2050 will have been built between now and then.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) have come together to develop a rating system for neighborhood planning and development based on the combined principles of Smart Growth, New Urbanism, and green infrastructure and building.  The outcome of this collaborative effort is the LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) Rating System, a set of performance standards for certifying the planning and development of sustainable neighborhoods.

Our speakers for this session will be Jill Cohen and Robert Cannellos. Jill Cohen is a Registered Landscape Architect (RLA), Certified Planner (AICP) and LEED AP with more than 26 years of professional experience focused on planning, urban design, landscape architecture and sustainable design.  She is the principal of her own firm, JBC Planning & Design. Jill is formerly an Associate with Miller Legg, working closely with municipalities and institutional and private clients on projects involving planning, site planning, and land-use, platting, processing and permitting, due diligence and documentation.  She also worked on revitalization and LEED sustainability projects, as well as assisted cities in securing grants for project improvements and redevelopment.

Robert Cannellos, a LEED AP and Sustainability Consultant with the Spinnaker Group, is currently a Certifying agent on numerous LEED projects in Southern and Western Florida. Robert has been active in the USGBC for almost nine years.  In addition to being a member of the South Florida Chapter's Board of Directors, he is serves on the Florida-Caribbean Regional Council, and is the co-founder and Chair of the Treasure Coast and Palm Beach Branch.

This presentation is valid for 1.5 AICP CM credit.
